Second-ranked Roncalli made an early season statement Jan. 23 at the Lawrence Central Invitational, putting up 107.975 points to outduel No. 3 Columbus North and the seventh-ranked host Bears.

Alyssa Servie was the victorious Rebels’ only winner, taking the balance beam with a 9.5. But Roncalli managed a trio of third-place finishes in this eighth-team event to get past Columbus North (106.55) and Lawrence Central (106.4).
The third-place Bears fared extremely well individually, garnering 1-2 finishes in three events: vault (Jessie Leko 9.75 and Camille Hayes 9.575), floor exercise (Leko 9.65, Hayes 9.425), and all-around (Leko 38.1, Hayes 37.475).
“Our first annual LC Invite was great!” said Bears coach Barbi Kern. “Once again we had some really good performances – having Camille & Jessie take 1 & 2 in the all-around was nice.
“But it also shows (junior) Kylie Culley and (freshman) Natalie Layfield how important their scores are to the team score. We are looking forward to adding new skills and cleaning up the routines to prepare us for the second half of the season.”
As Kern alluded to, all those 1-2 finishes weren’t quite enough to overcome Columbus North for runner-up honors behind Roncalli.
Chrissy Day (a 9.6 on the uneven bars) was the Bull Dogs’ only winner, but Columbus North managed four fourth-place finishers to hold off LC. McCutcheon (95.875) finished fourth, with Lafayette Jefferson (91.925) taking fifth.
